This American Flag Heart project is the perfect way to celebrate the Fourth of July, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, or simply show your love for the USA. Featuring bold brushstrokes, shimmering reflective glass, metallic gold accents, and a dramatic black background, this beginner-friendly mixed-media project creates a one-of-a-kind piece that's perfect for patriotic decor!

Tape the tracer to your canvas. Slide graphite paper underneath and trace the outside of the heart along with the center dividing line and the wavy flag stripes with a stylus.
The wavy lines don't need to be perfectly straight - in fact, a loose, hand-painted look adds character to the finished piece. Once the tracer is removed, you'll have a guide for the blue field of the flag and the red and white stripes.
Using a large flat brush, paint the sides of the canvas first with black acrylic paint.
Next, carefully paint the entire background around the outside of the heart, leaving the heart itself unpainted.
Because black paint is covering white canvas, expect to apply two coats for solid coverage. Allow the first coat to dry completely before adding the second.

Fill the left portion of the heart with Prussian Blue or another deep navy blue. Apply one coat first, allow it to settle, then add a second coat if needed for even coverage.
Don't worry about making the dividing line perfectly crisp - you'll intentionally soften these edges later for a painterly look.
Using white acrylic paint, fill in each alternating stripe. Most white paints will need two coats over the canvas, especially where the graphite lines show through.
Fill the remaining stripes with Cherry Red acrylic paint. Again, two coats will likely be necessary for rich color.
As you paint, don't stress over perfectly straight edges. This project embraces expressive brushwork that gives the flag movement and personality. Let dry.

Instead of leaving crisp borders between the colors, use a palette knife to create soft transitions.
Load a small amount of blue paint onto the edge of the palette knife and gently pull a little color into the white stripes near the center line. Repeat the process with white paint, then with red, allowing small amounts of each color to overlap.
These subtle smears mimic the look of expressive palette knife paintings and help remove the "paint-by-number" appearance.
Using a palette knife, lightly drag small touches of metallic gold paint across portions of the stripes.
Keep the application subtle. Tiny streaks of gold add warmth and elegance without overpowering the patriotic color palette. A little goes a long way. Let dry.

Once the paint is dry, use a metallic gold paint pen to loosely outline the heart.
Rather than drawing one perfect line, sketch multiple overlapping scribbly lines around the outside of the heart. You can also add a few extra sketch marks and tiny accent lines throughout the design.
These freehand details give the project a modern mixed media feel.
Now comes the fun part! Fill the blue section of the heart with a mixture of Pacific Blue Reflective glass and Cobalt Reflective glass.
Mixing both shades creates beautiful dimension while the reflective backing catches the light and mimics sparkling stars. Arrange the glass organically instead of lining up the pieces. Let different shapes and sizes overlap naturally for texture.

Put on your rubber gloves. Mix equal parts resin and hardener according to the manufacturer's instructions. For this project, I mixed 1 ounce of resin.
Stir slowly for approximately three minutes, scraping the sides and bottom of the cup as you mix to minimize bubbles.
Carefully drizzle the resin over the crushed glass, making sure every piece is coated. Use a gloved finger or silicone spreader to guide the resin across the glass and toward the edges. If needed, lightly run your finger around the glass to ensure full coverage.
Pass a heat gun or small torch quickly over the resin surface. Be careful not to overheat any one area.

Once fully cured, your Patriotic Flag Heart becomes a bold statement piece that's perfect for summer decorating, Fourth of July celebrations, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, or displaying year-round as a tribute to American pride.
Whether you're new to glass art or already love mixed media painting, this project is a fun and approachable way to create something truly unique.
