Red Heart Door Hanger ❤️

heart valentine's day Jan 28, 2026

This bold red resin heart is one of those projects that looks fancy but is actually very approachable, even if you’re newer to resin and glass art. Using an inexpensive wooden heart base, a little paint, crushed glass, and resin, you’ll create a dimensional Valentine’s piece that’s sweet and full of texture. It’s perfect for hanging on a door, gifting for Valentine’s Day, or adding a pop of love to your studio or home.

Step 1: Prep the Wooden Heart

Begin by removing the ribbon from the wooden heart so it doesn’t get paint or resin on it. Set it aside - you’ll add it back once everything is fully cured. Because the heart is made from porous fiberboard, it will absorb paint quickly, especially on the first coat.

If the edges of your heart feel rough, this is a good time to lightly sand them before painting.

Step 2: Paint the Heart

Using a large brush, apply a full coat of Cherry Red acrylic paint to the front of the heart. Don’t worry if the paint seems to disappear - this board soaks it up fast. Once the first coat dries (which happens quickly), apply a second coat.

While the second coat is still wet, start adding subtle color variation. Lightly blend in small touches of black along one edge and pink along the opposite edge. This keeps the heart from looking flat and gives it depth. Add a soft swipe of white on one side, following the curve of the heart, to create a gentle highlight.

Once the paint is dry, use a dry brush to lightly apply metallic gold paint around the outer edge of the heart. Let everything dry completely before moving on.

Step 3: Elevate and Arrange the Glass

Place your heart on blocks so it’s lifted off your work surface. This prevents resin from gluing it to the table.

Begin sprinkling rose gold crushed glass along one side of the heart, tapering it slightly as it moves toward the bottom point. Add clear glass along the edge and through parts of the glass area to allow the painted background to show through. The clear glass adds texture without overpowering the color underneath. I also have a cute wooden piece that says "Love" that I'll add as well after applying resin.

Step 4: Mix and Apply the Resin

Mix your resin according to the manufacturer’s instructions. For this project, 2½–3 ounces total is recommended, especially if you’re using a generous amount of glass. Mix slowly for three full minutes, scraping the sides and bottom of your cup to ensure it’s fully combined.

Slowly drizzle resin over the glass first. You’ll immediately notice the colors deepen and become translucent. Continue adding resin until all glass is coated, then gently spread excess resin across the painted areas using your gloved hands or a stir stick.

Be mindful of the ribbon hole - avoid letting resin pool inside it so you can reinsert the ribbon later.

Step 5: Attach the “Love” Word

Before placing the wooden word, coat it completely with resin - front, back, and edges. Once covered, gently set it onto the heart, positioning it close to the glass for balance. Press lightly so it settles into the resin layer.

Check carefully for bare spots or bubbles around the letters.

Use a heat gun, small torch, or even a hair dryer on high heat and low air to pop bubbles. Keep the heat source moving and never let the flame touch the resin surface. This step ensures a smooth, glossy finish.

Allow the heart to cure completely on a level surface. Once fully hardened, reinsert the ribbon and hang your finished piece. The resin will continue to harden over the next 24–72 hours.

The final piece has rich red tones, soft pink highlights, warm gold edges, and sparkling glass texture. It’s bold but not overpowering, romantic without being overly traditional. Hang it on a door, gallery wall, or gift it as a handmade Valentine’s keepsake!
