If you're looking for a fun mixed media art project, this Rum & Coke art piece is the perfect blend of rustic charm and glossy glass art. Whether you’re making it for your bar area, a gift, or just a cool conversation piece, this wooden sign combines recycled glass, resin, and creative placement to create something truly unique.
Start by sealing the wooden tray with a thin coat of clear sealer. This helps prevent the resin from soaking into the wood. If your tray has any seams, tape the underside to stop resin from leaking through. You can also tape around the outer frame if you want to keep it clean.
Put on rubber gloves. Mix 4 oz total of ArtResin and stir gently for three minutes. Be sure to scrape the sides and bottom of your cup and stir stick as you go. You’ll want a well-mixed, bubble-free batch for this first pour.
Pour a thin layer of resin inside the tray to act as the “glue” for your glass elements. Use a silicone spreader (or even your gloved fingers) to distribute the resin evenly across the bottom. Don’t worry if a little gets on the sides.
Before placing the glass, coat the back side and edges of each bottle shard with a bit of resin. This gives it a stronger hold. Place your pieces however you’d like - I included the top and bottom of each bottle to make it feel complete. Be cautious of sharp edges or hone them down beforehand.
You can tilt or layer the pieces for visual interest. I also added some baby shards and clear classic filler glass in the empty spaces to act as “ice.”
Once your pieces are in place, drizzle more resin over the top, especially where the bottle edges are exposed. This helps seal everything in and reduces the chance of sharp spots. I focused extra resin around the top edges of my glass and let it flow naturally into the surrounding area.
Use a heat gun to gently pop any bubbles in the resin and help it level out.
For extra dimension, I added another light sprinkle of clear glass over the top without covering it in resin. This gives it a raw, icy look, which I love. You can find acrylic “ice cube” fillers at craft stores too!
This project turned out so cool! You could customize it further with labels, quotes, or painted backgrounds if that’s your style. Just remember to seal paper labels if you want to protect them from the resin.
